During the months of March, April and May, 2008, the Director of Instruction, Gerry Brennan, presented workshops on Reading and Writing for Teachers and SAs in each of the schools. In many cases, classroom demonstrations started the investigation of writing assessment and the use of well planned processes to improve student performance. The results of effective assessment were then used to guide future instruction.
In cooperation with the Yukon Teachers' Association, seven SD 87 teachers and Gerry Brennan attended Reading Assessment workshops presented by author/educator and leading authority on reading, Faye Brownlie. The result was an increased understanding of the importance of effective assessment practices to guide instruction and improve student performance. The team of teachers who attended these workshops will discuss ways to implement these reading assessment practices in SD 87 in the upcoming school year.
On August 28 and 29, 2008, School District 87 is sponsoring in-service activities for all interested SD 87 staff. The activities will beneift both current staff members and those new to the District. The agenda will include comprehensive look at the new Student Services model to be used this year. Also, there will be in-depth workshops on assessment, literacy and planning. A review of Technology network and usage will occur as well. We look forward to the participation of many staff members. |
