School District 87 Literacy

School District 87 continues to maintain a high priority for Literacy. The term Balanced Literacy has been presented and efforts continue to develop strong strategies for all staff. We are committed to improving Literacy skills for all students, as reflected in all school Growth Plans, the District Literacy Plan and the District Achievement Contract.

The newest K-7 BC English Language Arts IRP (2006) clearly identifies the areas of Literacy we are entrusted to address in our classes. Its aim is to “provide students with opportunities for personal and intellectual growth through speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and representing to make meaning of the world and to prepare them to participate effectively in all aspects of society”. The emphasis on Oral Language development has increased and representing learning has become more distinct in the Learning Outcomes. The current 8-12 English Language Arts IRP will be mandated for September, 2008. It, too, has the same aim and also emphasizes oral language development more than before.

For both IRPs, the greatest impact will occur through the teaching of metacognition (thinking about one’s thinking). This will directly address how students understand their learning styles and how to use this understanding to set goals for improved performance.

Assessment FOR, AS and OF learning is also presented in both IRPs. This means students are assessed in order to support their learning and guide instruction to address areas that require improvement. The assessment becomes the responsibility of the teacher and student. Given opportunities to reflect on performance teachers can determine the ‘next step’ to growth, while students can do the same by setting goals and taking ownership of their learning.

District Literacy Plan

District Literacy Plans provide a way for each school district to work with community partners to improve literacy locally. The BC School Act (81.1) states that a Board of Education must, on or before July 15th of a school year, establish and make available to the public, a District literacy Plan for the school year, setting out the plan for improving literacy in the geographic area of the school district. In essence, the District Literacy Plan is a statement of commitment by a school district to work with community partners. It is a community-wide process that includes the school district as on of many partners.
The District Literacy Plan was submitted to the Ministry of Education July 6, 2009.To access the most current School District 87 District Literacy Plan CLICK HERE
